Botswana Manual Workers Union as it is commonly known was formed in 1965 as the country was being prepared for independence by the British Colonial administration. Initially, it was called Government Industrial Workers Union (GIWU) with membership drawn from both the Manual or industrial class employees (blue color workers) and permanent and pensionable (P&P) Cadres.
